First you spend years being a devoted SysOp, hassling and hassling
with that dumb PAL mode, trying to get that latest Euro thingy or game to
run. Then you finally decide to switch BBS software, you look all around,
you check everything out, you finally come across this terrific stuff.
And it's in PAL mode.
It's just not fair.
*
What you're aiming for are those four lines of the Stats box at the bottom
of the screen when someone in online. You also want the title bar to be
correct, of course, as well as have everything on the WB and your DU line up
nicely.
This stuff does have an NTSC mode, as you no doubt have tried, but I found
its interlaced screen REAL buggy when I also had non-interlaced screens up,
like my DU. It was Freeze City constantly. Besides that, I also want to
view the BBS as the users are viewing it, and that's mostly non-interlace.
One of my own problems was that I'm using an old 1080 monitor for the BBS,
so it only has the vertical `squeeze-down' adjustment knob on (actually, in)
the back, but no raise-and-lower knob. So I went through all kinds of PAL
programs, and settled on Degrader 1.0. I also tweaked that adjustment knob
on (in) the back of the monitor, set the ScreenMode prefs on PAL, and played
with the Overscan prefs.
Somewhere in there, I got it.
On my own computer, a souped-up 1.3 A500, no way am I going t keep it in
PAL mode all the time, so I used this nifty little "HiRes" program, included.
It shows you how to file-zap your system-configuration file to increase the
height of the screen, or, actually, to increase the depth. Works perfectly,
and I'm now hooked on my 320 x 478 screen for just general use.
One note about this version of Degrader: I tried some of the newer
Degraders, and they didn't work. Someone suggested this version, and
amazingly, it did the trick. The hassle is, the CPU program gets hung up,
after Degrader's been run. So if you're using CPU or SetCPU on your machine,
and suddenly the st-seq hangs up, that's why. Unfortunately, the machine
runs slower without SetCPU (with an 030/32-bit mem), so I'm currently running
it in "fast" mode and losing the bottom lines of the stats box.
You also can't reach all the boxes on the bottom of the Editors and Config
Menus on a 320 x 400 screen, but you can get it close enough to use by just
playing with the Prefs. To get all four lines of the stats box, you have to
get a little more serious.
